Woman Knifed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Attack Succumbs to Injuries
A woman stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault at a bus stop within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, West Midlands Police said.
The suspect, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Police Response
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating they were working to understand the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her work period around 10 PM Friday night.
She described the scene as extremely disorderly, adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"A lot of co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at major concert locations... and to think a totally random act [happened], you know, it's terrible."
