United Nations Ends Penalties on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit the coming week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in December 2024, concluding 13 years of civil war.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and supportive states for their support of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday follows President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened for the first time in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".

The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit will not be the president's debut journey to America this year. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position across international circles" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
