Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning points deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the champions a winning beginning.

Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
